Lost Forest, 2024
The belief that all things do not exist alone, but that there is another thing supporting their existence is a concept that has existed in Lanna society for a long time. Especially the guardian spirits who protect and care for natural resources. It is an important root in determining the relationship of people in society with everything around them.
After the Bowring Treaty in 1855, foreign companies were opened to more teak concessions in the Lanna forests. By setting up companies in cities with important rivers flowing through them, such as Chiang Mai, Lampang, Phrae, to use rivers to transport cut teak from concession forests to the central region.Teak forestry is the third largest source of income for the country during the period. 1855-1939, in the year 1927 alone, teak was concessioned from 32 forests, totaling 13 million pieces.
Mae Wang Forest is one of the forests with a large amount of teak and was concessioned by the Bombay Berma Company in 1892.
Among the changes that have taken place, forest resources have been cut down and removed from the forest in unprecedented numbers.There was a movement of logging workers into the area. There has been a transfer of knowledge and technology in forest management. There was an exchange of cultures. and generated enormous income from the timber trade But in the dimension of the old beliefs that are hidden and embedded with the people in the area During this period of transition, how has it been adjusted or changed?
River of fluctuations, 2024
Throughout the distance of nearly 5,000 kilometers that the Mekong River runs through. The abundance of this river sustains life on both sides of its banks each season. It's both a thoroughfare. source of livelihood and is home to a wide variety of living things
When the demand for electricity increases The construction of dams to convert hydropower into electricity began to pop up in various parts. of the Mekong River, including its tributaries When a large river that once flowed freely was blocked The seasons in the Mekong River therefore fluctuate. Life that depends on water is therefore based on uncertainty.
River of fluctuations seeks to explore the stories of people who depend on the Mekong River for their lives. On a day when the season of the river is no longer predictable, through images, sounds, and representative objects of the people we encounter, we reframe them as witnesses to the fluctuations.
River of fluctuations is a journey into the area to find the story of the river. From the Mun River in Warin Chamrap District to the point where the Mun River meets the Mekong River in Khong Chiam District. To exchange stories of people affected by changes in the river and objects representing each person with the river glass are here and has been rearranged in the exhibition. including recording images and sounds of the river throughout the trip to create a 15 minute video with Nattapon Innoo
